The Austrian internet portal www.oe24.at has published an interview with Boris Nemsic, CEO Telekom Austria Group, which purchased 70% of shares of the foreign private company “Mobile Digital Communication” (MDC, trade marks Velcom, Privet) on the 3.10.2007.
The international network of the company increased to 14 mio of customers.

— Mr. Nemsic, your Belarusian transaction was concluded very quickly.

Yes, we wanted to avoid surprises, we have been long preparing this transaction, what, in principle, gave us confidence that the purchase itself will go quick.

— When "Telekom Austria " will come to Belarus ?

At first we need to wait for formal ending of all procedures, what will happen not earlier than in the 4 th quarter of this year. Besides, we have bought a company which is successfully operating on the Belarusian market - we do not start from zero.

— Why your company is interested in the Belarusian market?

Mobile phone penetration rate in Belarus is about 66%, while in Europe it is 100%. There is huge growth potential in Belarus , though I mean not market share growth – we got 42% with MDC – but the increase of the quantity of clients.

— Where do you see the biggest potential?

In contrast to other markets, the Prepaid service is almost not developed in Belarus – this service is rendered there for only one year. Only in this sphere there is a lot of work. We are also ready to bring in Belarus our experience in the newest mobile technologies and services: this market is not at all developed as well, we have so much opportunities there.

— Do you consider Belarus as a risky market?

Yes , but rather in the political arena . We are a mobile operator . Mobile phones have no connection to politics. In the telecommunication sector all goes well in Belarus . We come to the republic not as mankind savers. Besides, it seems to me the more western economic standards are introduced and implemented in Belarus , the better it is for the development of the country in general.

— That means you do not expect any major difficulties?

We have experience, we have dealt with “difficult” markets. A wrong impression has formed that Belarus is situated beyond the world’s end. The flight from Vienna to Minsk takes 1,5 hours. It is almost the same as to fly to some far Austrian city, if the plane is not very fast.
