Sustainability

The paper industry makes a valuable contribution to climate protection by the use of renewable raw materials such as wood and waste paper as well as the use of organic fuels. Important environmental indicators for the Austrian paper industry, such as dust and sewage emissions have shown measurable improvements in the last years.

With regard to waste paper, the voluntary commitment scheme (in existence for 10 years) has led to best practice in the paper industry. Paper, cardboard and corrugated board are collected by theAltpapier Recycling OrganisationsgesmbH (ARO) (German only). Production waste from paper, card, and all typesof paperboard go back into the paper mill where 100% is used. 62% of waste paper from the Austrian paper industry goes into manufacturing base paper and card for packaging.

Paper Processing Industry

The predominantly small and medium companies in Austria who deal with paper and card processing, paper containers and other areas of paper processing are particularly geared to the international market.

The Trade Association for paper workers from trade and industry represents around 100 companies. The company sizes range from 30 to 500 employees and the annual production value of the pulp and paper processing industry is around EUR 1.7 billion.
