The International Energy Foundation (IEF), an international association of scientists and energy experts, has called for a worldwide collaboration on a scientific level in the field of energy and climate change.
To offer a suitable context for this endeavour, ENERGEX – a series of congresses on energy – has been set up. With the ENERGEX 2008 in Vienna , the congress is relaunched and is supposed to become a high-profile, global platform on energy issues.
The organising committee and the scientific committee are set up by scientists from Europe, the US , China and India , as well as representatives from the international organisations UNIDO, OPEC, IIASA, IAEA and IEA. Endorsing organisations are the UNIDO, IIASA, UNEP as well as the European Commission.
The motto of next year’s congress is „Energy for Human Development and the Protection of the Environment”. “It will be most important to implement energy measures and policies to finally bring about a paradigm change and to globally establish sustainability with respect to energy and environment issues”, emphasizes Prof. Nebojsa Nakicenovic, chair of the scientific committee of the congress and co-author of the assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Penal of Climate Change (IPCC), an association that has been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize together with Al Gore.
The congress is under the patronage of Dr. Heinz Fischer, the President of the Federal Republic of Austria. The members of the honorary committee are the Federal Chancellor, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Economics and Labour, the Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water Management, the Minister of Science and Research as well as the President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the General Secretary of the Federation of Austrian Industry. President of the Congress is Ambassador Dr. Irene Freudenschuss-Reichl and Professor Dr. Peter Skalicky, rector of the Vienna University of Technology is the president of the organising committee.
On the last day of the congress an international media convention on energy issues will take place right after a Youth Caucus. This media event will be lead by an internationally renowned journalist.
