The Meuraxa hospital in Banda Aceh with 86 beds was totally destroyed by the Tsunami in December 2004 and will be rebuilt by Austria.
Major funding for the general hospital is provided by "Neighbour in Need" (2.651 Mio. Euro) followed by the fundraising campaign by Austrian business initiated by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and other donors. The pediatric clinic is financed entirely by the Hungarian Red Cross (1.9 Mio. Euro).

Implementing agency for this project is the Austrian NGO Hilfswerk Austria, the tender for general contractor was awarded to an Austrian company with plenty of experience in hospital projects in Indonesia - VAMED Engineering - using a number of Indonesian companies as sub-contractors.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the new Meuraxa Hospital took place on 17 December 2005 in presence of the Chairman of BAPEL Aceh-Nias / Executive Agency for the Rehabilitation & Reconstruction of Aceh and Nias, Mr. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, the Mayor of the Municipality of Banda Aceh, Mr. Mawardy Nurdin, the Austrian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Bernhard Zimburg, the Chairman of Neighbour in Needs, Mr. Michael Opriesnig, and the Managing Director of Hilfswerk Austria, Mrs. Heidi Burkhart.
