Klimt steals the show at Ireland's largest holday fair

30 January 2012

Weekend breaks in Vienna and Salzburg and walking holidays in Tirol and Vorarlberg were top hits at this year’s Austria stand at the Holiday World Show organised by Advantage Austria in Dublin. “We were bowled over by the number of people who said they’d been to Austria four and five times and wanted to go back”, said Austrian Commercial Counsellor Wilhelm Nest.

With 50 people passing each stand on average per minute, business was hectic at the Austria stand. Taking place in January every year, the Holiday World Show at the R.D.S. is the most important platform for presenting  tourism deals to the public for the coming year.

Many visitors were looking for information on music concerts in Vienna and Salzburg. Both cities are clearly viewed in the eyes of Irish holiday-goers as the home of classical music, and attract large numbers of art and culture enthusiasts. “Gustav Klimt stole the show this year being the 150th anniversary of his birth” said Event Manager Dagmar McGuinness. “The Klimt motifs are instantly recognisable, even at a distance, and the promotional materials were extremely popular”.

Another magnet was the Sound of Music tour with many women saying they wanted to take their daughters to Salzburg to visit the places where the film had been made. Tirol Tourism’s Fabian Planck had a constant queue of fresh-air fans asking for information on walking, cycling and kayaking. The region of St. Anton am Arlberg in Tirol proved very popular yet again for both skiers and walkers.

Outdoor pursuits were also strong selling points for Vorarlberg and Ötztal, where much-loved Hotel Edelweiss and Gurgl is located. Lots of questions were centred on accommodation, amenities, prices and “how to get there”.
