Vienna tops worldwide ranking of "smart cities"

The online magazine "Co.Exist" put's Austria's capital at the top of a list of "smart cities" ahead of Toronto, New York and Berlin.

US climate strategist Boyd Cohen recently raked Vienna top of list of ten citiesfor technology and sustainability in the online magazine "Co.Exist". Vienna was followed by Toronto, Paris, New York, London, Tokyo, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hong Kong and Barcelona.

Innovation and sustainability are the most important criteria for a smart city according to Cohen. The use of information and communication technology in using resources is also taken into account. The high quality of life and a moderate ecological footprint also played a key role in Vienna's top spot in the rankings.

With a population of 1.7 million Vienna is a worldwide model for urban quality of living. Vienna was the only city in the top 10 in every single one of the categories considered by the author - from innovation to green city to quality of life. A range of global and regional rankings and studies were evaluated for this "Smart Cities" ranking , the first of its kind worldwide.
