Coming up to Christmas every year many people start thinking about stocking up on a special tipple for the Yuletide season. To herald the beginning of Advent, today’s Irish Times contains a supplement called “John Wilson’s Wines of the Year”. In it, wine critic John Wilson lists his favourite vintages of the year 2012.

Among John’s favourite whites are two Austrians. They are:

1) Schloss Gobelsberg Grüner Veltliner 2011 12.5%, retailing for €13.50. John’s comment: “This is one of the best value white wines currently available. Light to medium-bodied with crisp acidity and rounded pear fruits.”

Stockists: Liston’s, Camden Street; Donneybrook Fair; Redmond’s, Ranelagh; 64 Wine, Glasthule; Martin’s, Fairview; McHughs, Kilbarrack and Malahide Road; Red Island, Skerries; On the Grapevine, Dalkey; Gibney’s, Malahide; Probus Wines, Fenian Street and Oughterard.

2) Zobinger Heiligenstein, Riesling 2011, Hirsch, Kamptal, 12.5% retailing at €19.50. John’s comment: “This is one of the great wines of Austria, with a marvellous combination of intense, rich, opulent fruits cloaking a backbone of crisp mineral acidity.”

Stockists: pauldubsky.com; wineonline.ie; Corkscrew, Chatham Street; Gibney’s, Malahide; Hole in the Wall, Dublin 7; J&C Kenny, Galway.

Among the reds John gives an old favourite an honourable mention:

Blaufränkisch 2010, Moric, Burgenland, 12.5%, retailing at €18.99. John’s comment: “I made this bottle one of my wines of the year last year, and have tasted it on many occasions this year. Vibrant and fresh, but with real depth, pure blueberry and dark fruits, well-integrated acidity, and good clean length.”

Stockists: On the Grapevine, Dalkey; No 1 Pery Square, Limerick; Market 57, Westport; Liston’s, Camden Street.

Perhaps John's praise will encourage more Irish people to venture into new territory, away from the old reliable Sauvignons and Pinots!
