AUSTRIAN OFFICIALS STRENGTHEN TIES WITH LIMERICK

Austria meets Limerick
27 March 2014

Austrian Commercial Counsellor Wilhelm Nest teams up with Ambassador Thomas Nader to visit City of Culture 2014 - Limerick

First stop on this two-day visit to Limerick (26-27 March 2014) was Limerick City and County Council to meet the Mayor, Kathleen Leddin, Chairman John Egan and Director of Service Oliver O'Loughlin. Top of the agenda was the City of Culture and the inspiring development plan "Limerick 2030".

Next was a meeting with decision makers at Shannon Development where the aviation cluster was of particular interest, given Austria's strong aviation ties with Ireland (aircraft leasing and maintenance).

Finally, the Austrian duo met with the Chairman and CEO at the Limerick Chamber.

Austria has left a strong engineering footprint in Limerick with two major projects. The Limerick tunnel, with a capacity for 30,000 cars under the river Shannon, was built to large extent by a subsidiary of Austrian construction giant Strabag. Two further Austrian engineering companies supplied key technology for the low-energy County Hall: the glass facade was manufactured and erected by Gigg and the wooden components were supplied and fitted by Wiehag.
