AUSTRIAN WINE EXPERTS AT CLARENCE IN DUBLIN

One hundred guests gathered to hear two leading names from the Austrian world of wine - Niki Moser and Willie Klinger - speak at a wine tasting dinner in Cleaver East restaurant in the Clarence Hotel on Tuesday. They were invited over by Wilhelm Nest of Advantage Austria.

One of the most famous names in Austrian viticulture, Niki Moser, and his daughter Kathi flew into Dublin this week to present  their wines to a group of 100 wine lovers. They were joined by the head of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, Willie Klinger. Over the course of the evening the guests sampled 16 wines from boutique wine growers along with a meal devised by Oliver Dunne.

Seasoned wine critic John Wilson of the Irish Times said later "I was surprised at how great the Zweigelt was, and the Rieslings were superb. Willie Klinger is a great Ambassador for his country's wines. Many people are familiar nowadays with the Grüner Veltliner varietal but this evening was a great way to showcase the great variety of Austrian wines".

Four wineries were represented:
· Sepp Moser
· Schloss Gobelsburg
· Winzer Krems and
· Weingut Wohlmuth
All wines are available in Ireland. 

Also present were Kerri Judge and Noel MacMahon from Febvre (representing Sepp Moser), Joe Karwig from Karwig Wines (representing Weingut Wohlmuth and Winzer Krems) and Barbara Boyle from Origin Wines (representing Schloss Gobelsburg). Karwig Wines sponsored the apperatif, a sparkling wine by Winzer Krems.

The media too was out in force with Jean Smullen from Sunday World, John Wilson from the Irish Times, Martin Moran of the Sunday Times and Raymond Blake of Food and Wine Magazine. The restaurant is located in the Clarence Hotel which belongs to Irish rock bank U2.
