Success of dual education system attracts international interest

16 October 2014

A recent study has identified the key success factors in the Dual VET (vocational education and training) system and forms a research-based starting point for discussions on related knowhow transfer processes.

Austria’s strong international standing in terms of youth employment shows that the Austrian Dual VET system is essential for training young professionals. It is therefore hardly surprising that the Dual VET system (parallel education at work and in vocational schools) has attracted worldwide interest.

Many countries are discussing whether to introduce a Dual VET system against a backdrop of high youth unemployment and skilled labour shortages.
As a result WIFI International commissioned a study on “Transfer of the Dual VET System” from ibw Austria - Research & Development in VET as part of a cross-border cooperation between Austria and Slovakia, conducted under the SmartNet project. Existing apprenticeship training systems were used to identify seven factors which are vital to the success of a Dual VET system. The study does not, however, issue recommendations for specific countries, instead choosing to highlight relevant starting points and different options for designing such a system.
