Voestalpine wins major order for pipeline project

13 October 2015

The Austrian steel group voestalpine has managed to win another major order in the fiercely competitive energy sector. The company will supply 95,000 tonnes of linepipe plates for a natural gas project in Abu Dhabi.

The Group has secured a multi-million pipeline contract in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). voestalpine Grobblech GmbH , part of the Steel Division, will deliver 95,000 tonnes of linepipe plates for the IGD-E natural gas project in Abu Dhabi by March 2016.

Over the next two years Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is constructing a 114km high-pressure pipeline to supply natural gas extracted in the Arabian Gulf to the city, in order to meet its growth in demand for natural gas. The high-quality special plates from Austria will be processed on site into pipes with a diameter of around a meter (42 inches) by a local partner company. The project is set for completion in 2017.

Just one example of the company’s many successful pipeline projects is the recent “Rota 3” project in Brazil, for which voestalpine supplied 117,000 tons of linepipe plates for the deep-ocean pipeline in one of the world’s largest oil fields close to Rio de Janeiro.

With around 500 Group companies and sites, voestalpine is represented in more than 50 countries and on every continent. The Group is a leading partner to the European automotive and consumer goods industries and to the oil and gas industries worldwide. voestalpine is also the world market leader in turnout technology, special rails, tool steel, and special sections. In the business year 2014/15, the listed company reported revenue of EUR 11.2 billion and had around 47,500 employees worldwide.
