On December 7th. 2006, the Austrian Commercial Counsellor, Mr. Franz Bachleitner, organized the first-of-its-kind convention on "Doing Business with Central and Eastern Europe's Hi-Tech Industry" in Tel Aviv . The convention was focused on the hi-tech sector in Central and Eastern Europe and organized in cooperation with the Commercial Counsellors of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia and attended by the countries´ ambassadors.
170 Israeli hi-tech managers participated in the event with around 20 visitors from abroad. The event´s success shows the great interest of the Israeli high-tech business community in Central&Eastern European markets and in Austria as a gateway to Eastern Europe. The market potential of these five participating countries of Central Europe generated a tremendous interest from the Israeli audience. The sum of the GDP of the participating countries alone is more than 1.5 trillion US-Dollars with a total population of around 75 million people and the current 5% average economic growth rate in Central Eastern Europe.
Foreign experts were invited especially for the event to speak about their countries. Among them: Univ. Prof. Dr. Dimitris Karagiannis from Vienna University, Institute for Knowledge and Business Engineering and Vice President of the Austrian Computer Society, who spoke about the Austrian IT market and the Austrian economic and business culture as a market and a gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. Mr. Petr Benes, Czech IT Publisher, explained about the links of the Czech Republic IT market to Central Europe. Mr. Zoltan Kovacs, President of the Hungarian Association of IT Companies, talked about the possibilities of cooperation with the Hungarian IT industry, Mr. Andrzej Lis, Polish Counsellor Economic and Mr. Zbigniew Magdziarz, Polish First Secretary for Trade and Investments gave a presentation describing the Polish IT and telecommunication market, Ms. Renata Malecova, Seccretary General of IT Association Slovakia talked about the Slovakian IT market mentioning the advantage of the low tax rate in her country .
The event also included a panel with a live discussion about the experience of companies in doing business with Central/Eastern European countries and Israel, with the participation of Mr. Hadar Himmelman C.E.O of MAXBILL, Mr. Reuven Sommer, Regional Manager CEE in Rad Data Communications, Mr. Offer Goren, Partner at Kornelius, Mrs. Aszodi, Partner at Univtrade, and Mr. Jan Rancak, Senior IT Specialist from CzechInvest.
Mr. Yair Amitay - Managing Director of MATIMOP - Israeli Industry Center for R&D gave a presentation on the potential of cooperation in industrial research and development to leverage business between Eastern Europe and Israel.
The lectures and panel discussion were followed by a business lunch and personal meetings with the Ambassadors, Commercial Counsellors and foreign experts of the participating countries.
