The Jhanjhavathi Reservoir Irrigation Project is located on the Janjhavathi River near to the town of Parvathipuram in Andhra Pradesh.
Originally the irrigation & CAD Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh had planned a barrage in conventional design but this was replaced by a new concept offered by Messrs. HYDROCONSTRUCT - a fully-flexible, water-filled rubber dam. There are two spans of 30 m each, with a total width of 60 m. The height of the inflated dam is 3 m only and in case of a flood during the monsoon it is deflated completely so that the water masses can float through without any hindrance. The HYDROCONSTRUCT system works completely automatically and there is a redundant, threefold safety system for the dam even in case of a total power failure.
The project was officially inaugurated on 1st January, 2006 by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and irrigates 14,000 acres of agricultural land. With this solution, the decade-long interstate dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Orissa was brought to an end and resettlement for a number of villages was avoided.
HYDROCONSTRUCT rubber dams are being considered red for two further projects in Andhra Pradesh, projects in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Orissa are under investigation.
