Indo-Austrian Joint Venture between Pratibha and Oestu-Stettin to provide Potable Water for Mumbai

In summer 2007 the Austrian-Indian Joint Venture Modaksagar (Östu-Stettin / Pratibha) was awarded the contract for building the Water Conveyance Tunnel Modaksagar (7000 m of length, diameter of 4.100 mm). The works were commenced in January 2008. The JV is confident to be able to finalize the project successfully and in time in accordance with the contractual requirements. The “light at the end of the tunnel” should be reached after 7000 m of advance, 20 m below the Bell Nallah Chamber, in summer 2010. After execution of the main tunnel, inner lining, civil works within the shafts and intakes, and finally pipeline construction at the surface will complete the works. Start of operation of the new water mains is planned to be during early spring of 2012.

The tunnel will be constructed with significant involvement of Austrian tunnel know-how by using TBM (tunnel boring machine) and backup systems consisting of drilling equipment, grouting devices and pumping stations.
