19. March 2018

The first Austrian trade mission to Bangladesh bestowed a great success on the participating company MED-EL. Thus, the enterprise managed to arrange a high-ranked network meeting of hearing-healthcare professionals in Dhaka the capital city of Bangladesh.

Within the framework of expert talks on governmental and university level as well as a subsequent round table that was hosted by the Austrian Ambassador and the Commercial Counsellor the organizers could bring together around 40 national and international experts. The participants discussed the achievements that have been made in Bangladesh over the last years and the future challenges in the field of the country’s hearing-healthcare system. As a result, the specialists agreed upon the launch of a joint project that should provide the local institutions with further know-how in the fields of surgery, audiology and speech therapy.

The implementation of the project will be supported by the experts of the HEARRING network – an association of 30 worldwide leading ENT-clinics which cooperate in the fields of research and development of treatment methods. Prof. Mohan Kameswaren (Madras ENT Research Foundation, India) and Prof. Henryk Skarżyński (World Hearing Center, Poland) represented the network at the round table. Both experts stressed the necessity of establishing additional educational programmes and specialists in the areas of audiology and speech therapy.  At the same time, they announced their will to provide the local institutions with the essential know-how to create these new capacities.

According to MED-EL this process is an indispensable prerequisite to carry out further activities in Bangladesh. Hence, the project will be the first step in the direction of comprehensive patient care. This high demand is one of the factors that has made MED-EL one of the leading companies in the market of implantable devices for almost 30 years.
