Austria ’s standards on infrastructure and construction are mainly oriented to the European level, but also have an international dimension. The emphasis is increasingly placed on the free movement of goods across borders. The foundation is provided by the European Construction Products Directive (89/106/EEC) that was transposed into national law and is supplemented by standards.
More and more construction products placed on the market in Austria and in the European Economic Area have to bear the CE mark. A list of relevant products is updated by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour every six months.
CE marking
In a four-level system, the manufacturers themselves or notified bodies are in charge of monitoring quality. One of these notified bodies is the Austrian Standards Institute. Without CE marking, the products concerned must not be placed on the Austrian market.
Eurocodes for Austria
The Eurocodes, i.e. European Standards, define the basis of dimensioning rules for all types of structures. On account of climate, location or conditions specific to Austria, national annexes complement them. An overview is presented on the Website www.eurocodes.at .
Environment and safety
Safety and environmental protection are of special concern to Austria. In these two fields, the national regulations differ from those of other European countries. Specifications for reclaimed asphalt and strict requirements for traffic signs that ensure road safety are just two out of numerous examples.
