Bangkok relies on measurement equipment from Austria

Sommer provides Bangkok with the radar discharge sensor RQ-30 to monitor the discharge and water levels of the main river and canals flowing through the city.

Sommer is a family owned company with extensive experience in developing and producing high quality sensors for meteorological and hydrological applications. Besides snow monitoring sensors and automatic weather stations, Sommer’s core competence is the discharge measurement of rivers, canals and streams.

Due to its geographical location and the monsoon season beginning at the end of July, Bangkok is threatened by floods every year. Besides the Chao Phraya river, a complex system of canals passes through Bangkok. Exact information about the water level and the discharge of this river and the canals is essential for optimal water control.

The Sommer RQ-30 is a unique radar sensor which measures, contact-free, the water level and the velocity of waterways in real time. The sensor automatically calculates the discharge based on a complex hydraulic model. The main advantage of the sensor is that it is installed outside the water. It is, therefore, maintenance free and gives reliable results, especially during high flow conditions.

With AMR Asia, Sommer had an excellent local partner, who installed the sensors into the municipal SCADA system.
