Sustainable transport solution for Korea's metropolis

A fully automated metro system is the innovative solution to transport problems of the rapidly growing South Korean city Uijoengbu. This is based on the Val technology from Siemens Austria in cooperation with Siemens international.

The fifteen rubber-tired Val-vehicles for Uijoengbu were manufactured at the Siemens factory in Vienna Simmering, the chassis are from the Siemens factory in Graz.

Siemens Austria is one of the major technology companies in Austria with a focus on the fields of energy, industry, healthcare and infrastructure & cities. The city Uijoengbu in South Korea benefited from the innovation of the technology leader through a fully automated metro system of type Val.

Uijeongbu is located north of the capital Seoul. Since 1995 its population has grown by as much as 38 % and will enlarge by further 28% to 500,000 people until 2020. This extreme change caused big problems regarding infrastructure and required sustainable solutions and an intelligent traffic management.

Based on knowhow of the Divisions Rail Systems and Mobility and Logistics of Siemens, a rail-based, fully automatic and driverless urban railway system has been established. It is characterized by short headways less than 1 minute, speeds up to 80 km / h and fast acceleration and quick braking phases. Green technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration reduce the energy consumption significantly. Rubber tires work particularly well on the slopes and are quieter than other tires in tight curves.15 two-section, rubber-tired Val-208 vehicles. Today the innovative system is already a model for the second-largest metropolis in the world, Seoul.
