Clean water for Cyprus

Cyprus’ environmental market was given a huge boost when it joined the EU. The capital’s wastewater association alone has invested 350 million euros in wastewater disposal in recent years.

Cyprus is the only country in Europe that is still divided. The Green Line separating the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot populations runs through the centre of the capital Nicosia.

The German-Austrian company WTE Wassertechnik GmbH is now uniting both population groups with the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Nicosia - a project which is of great symbolic importance for the island’s reunification efforts.

The Anthoupolis plant, which has a capacity of 100,000 PE, was the first of three wastewater treatment plants to be built in Nicosia within the last 10 years. A modern treatment process based on membrane technology has been deployed at the plant.

The Austrian company is also involved in other important environmental projects on the island, such as the wastewater treatment plants in Larnaca, Famagusta and Morphou.

WTE Wassertechnik GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of EVN AG. WTE has been part of the EVN Group since October 2003 and is a leading European service provider in the field of drinking water supply and wastewater disposal. The company has already constructed more than 100 wastewater treatment plants for around 18 million people. WTE is also responsible for the long-term operational management of 26 of these plants.
