Austrian Company Provides Water Supply to the Long Phu 1 Thermal Power Station

A range of water qualities are required to run the power station, and WABAG, an Austrian specialist in individual water treatment systems, was awarded the USD 26 million contract for planning, constructing, and commissioning an industrial water supply system.

In the south of Vietnam, a major project is underway. Petrovietnam is constructing a mega coal-fired power station with a capacity of 1.2 GW that will form an integral part of the national energy master plan.

In order to run the new coal-fired power station in the Soc Trang province, a secure supply of water of varying qualities was required. Boiler feed water in particular must be highly purified in order to guarantee the operational reliability and efficiency of the generators. The condensate is then purified and fed back into the water cycle of the power plant in order to save resources.

The Mekong river is the raw water source for the plant. Its water is highly contaminated, and due to the combination of fresh and salt water in the delta to form brackish water, the salt content fluctuates and can sometimes peak to high levels.

WABAG will be providing a total of five system packages for the Long Phu power station: A pre-purification system for treatment and filtration and a desalination system using reverse osmosis produce feed water for the full desalination system, as well as drinking water via ultrafiltration and ion exchange technology. The third package includes a reverse osmosis system that produces fully desalinated boiler feed water. For the condensate polishing system, filtration and ion exchange technology are used. Storage components and chemical dosing stations complete the order.
