University of Vienna celebrates 650th anniversary

2015.04.30

The Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the oldest in Europe.

The University of Vienna was founded on 12 March 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV, using the Parisian Sorbonne as a template. With this, he established an academic institution which has helped to define Europe's intellectual spirit over the subsequent 650 years and continues to this day.

Today around 9,700 staff work at the 19 faculties and centres at the University of Vienna, offering 180 study programmes for around 92,000 students. The University of Vienna is therefore Austria's largest research facility and its biggest educational institute. Furthermore, the international students at Vienna University make it an essential bridge between the city and the rest of the world.

A particularly impressive visualisation of the past into the future is provided by the new Alumni Map . This offers a virtual meeting point for Vienna University graduates all over the world. A lively alumni community is being built up, which doesn't focus on personal benefits, but instead gives graduates the chance to contribute to shaping the university's future - as a mentor, experienced expert or a source of innovation and inspiration.

The alumni community currently consists of around 200,000 living graduates of the University of Vienna. In companies, in the cultural sector, in the media, in sport, in academia and politics: Vienna university graduates are everywhere.
