Car component supplier Pollmann expands its business to Mexico

The Austrian firm Pollmann develops and produces electromechanical modules for a global market.

After weighing up the risks and opportunities of expanding into Mexico, Austrian car component supplier Pollmann has made its decision to build a new EUR 10 million factory there, joining the company’s existing facilities in the Czech Republic, the USA and China. Building the factory reinforces Pollmann’s claim to be as close to its customers as possible and positions the company as a major player in one of the most dynamic car markets in the world.

The firm, which will move into its new production facility and office in San Miguel de Allende (northwest of Mexico City) in 2017, forecasts a turnover of some USD 20 million over the next five years, providing jobs for about 200 employees.

While Pollmann’s existing US factory near Chicago has specialised in highly automated components for sunroofs, doors, engine compartments and E-mobility, the focus in Mexico will be on manual processes for large sunroof mechanisms and door locks. With its integrated assembly units and networked manufacturing systems, Pollmann is set on steering the new factory towards ‘industry 4.0’ and a major contract from sunroof manufacturers Inalfa is already in the bag – for two US car producers.

The family firm makes highly complex mechatronic modules for fitting to cars, and Pollmann is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of moving parts for sunroofs and electromechanical door locks. The company employs some 1,500 staff round the world and recently posted an annual turnover of more than EUR 140 million.
