Record results for Austrian tourism in 2016
2016 saw the highest ever number of visitors to Austria according to preliminary figures from Statistics Austria . A total of 41.45 million arrivals exceeded the record set the previous year (39.4 million) by 5.2%. More than two thirds of arrivals were by international guests (28.1 million/+5.2%), while guests from Austria were at a record high of 13.3 million (+5.1%).
The number of overnight stays (140.8 million, up an impressive 4.2% on 2015) was also a new record, with international guests accounting for 102.8 million of these overnight stays (up 4.1%) and Austrians 38 million (up 4.4%).
Looking at the country of origin, the number of overnight stays made by guests from Germany rose by 4.9% to 52.6 million, with the Netherlands and Switzerland – the second and third most important visitor markets – recording growth of 3.6 and 3.4% respectively. The numbers arriving from the UK (+4.3%) were also on the increase, while those from Italy slightly decreased (-1.8%).
The long-standing trend towards shorter stays and more upmarket accommodation showed no sign of abating in 2016.
