Africa and the Middle East were the regions which showed strongest growth for Austrian exports in 2006. While world-wide exports increased by 9.5%, exports to this region showed a remarkable 20% rise.

The export increase of 20% was the most dynamic of all the export regions. Even Eastern Europe - the traditional magnet for Austrian products - lagged behind with a rise of 15.5%. The most important Austrian trade partners in the region were, listed in order of export volume: South Africa, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt, Israel, Algeria, Pakistan and Nigeria. The reasons for this Austrian export success include Austria's excellent image in the region, coupled with high oil prices - almost a blessing for the development of Austrian exports to the region. The oil-producing countries now have higher incomes and are therefore also able to increase spending - good news for Austrian exports.
The events calendar of ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA reflects the importance of the region for the Austrian export economy. In 2006/2007 129 events were held for this region, from an overall total of around 800.
