A record-breaking year for Austrian tourism

3. May 2016

Austria again proved a hugely popular holiday destination in 2015, with the 135 million overnight stays logged last year marking a new record high – up 2.5% on 2014 and 1.3% above the previous peak in 2013.

Preliminary figures from Statistics Austria show that more visitors than ever took a holiday in Austria in 2015 – 39.4 million individual arrivals were registered, beating last year’s record total by 4.9%. Some two-thirds of these guests were international visitors (26.7 million, an increase of 5.6%), although the number of Austrians choosing a ‘staycation’ (12.7 million) was the highest ever recorded.

The number of overnight stays (135 million, up an impressive 2.5% on 2014) was also a new record, with international guests accounting for 98.7 million of these overnight stays (up 2.6%) and Austrians 36.4 million (up 2.1%).

Looking at the country of origin, the number of overnight stays made by guests from Germany rose by 1.3% to 50.1 million, with the Netherlands and Switzerland – the second and third most important visitor markets – recording growth of 1.7 and 5.8% respectively. The numbers arriving from the UK (+5.5%) and Italy (+5.4%) were also on the increase.

The long-standing trend towards shorter stays and more upmarket accommodation showed no sign of abating in 2015.
