Wood and wood products from Austria – an export hit

6. October 2016

Wood and wood products from Austria brought in no less than EUR 9.46 billion in export revenue last year, with paper, cardboard and viscose in particularly strong demand throughout the world.

Global demand for top-quality wood and wood products from Austria is rising. The timber sector continued to play an active role in Austria’s foreign trade in 2015 and delivered a surplus of EUR 3.85 billion, with imports to Austria amounting to EUR 5.61 billion far outstripped by exports of EUR 9.46 billion to the world as a whole.

The wood sector’s total export surplus for 2015 managed gains of EUR 240 million (+6.6%) on 2014’s figures, with the value of outgoing goods rising by EUR 280 million (+3.1%) while imports increased by EUR 40 million (+0.7%).

The wood-processing sector saw export totals of some EUR 4.82 billion returned by paper goods (paper, cardboard, viscose, etc.), EUR 2.92 billion by wood and wood products (including sawn timber), EUR 900 million by MDF and particle board, EUR 580 million by furniture and EUR 240 million by cellulose and wood pulp.

The balance sheet once again proves that the sector – which boasts an export ratio of 70% in the wood industry and 85% or more in the paper and pulp industry – is traditionally strongly export oriented. With a total manufacturing output value of EUR 12 billion, the wood sector is one of Austria’s most important branches of industry and secures some 300,000 jobs across more than 172,000 companies.
