Overview

The electrical engineering and electronic industry (EEI) plays a key role in the Austrian economy. With production worth over 11 billion euros and a workforce of nearly 60,000, the around 300 companies in the EEI are a crucial contributor to Austria's value creation. The reliability of the companies and the quality of their products are known across the world: around two thirds of production is exported.

An Industry on the move

The Austrian electrical engineering and electronics industry has developed into a provider of a broad range of innovative products and services in recent decades. Thanks to its dynamic growth it has become a key industry for many other sectors.

Using and Producing

The electrical engineering and electronics industry is responsible for the modernisation and development of various infrastructure segments, among others. The industry has special status among the industrial sectors because of its dual role as 'user and producer':

The electrical engineering and electronics industry uses the local infrastructure and the infrastructure connections on the international markets.
At the same time the EEI is a significant producer of infrastructure solutions in the areas of

  • Traffic,
  • Energy and
  • Information and Communication Technology.

This industry therefore places a special focus on research and development.

International Success

High-quality technological and electronic products 'made in Austria' are in demand across the world thanks to the know how of these companies. Around two thirds of production is exported to 150 countries world-wide. Companies from the Austrian EEI are ideal business partners as they are extremely familiar with international business life.

The most important market for the Austrian EEI is the EU, with exports to the new EU member states developing particularly well. The export quota for central and eastern Europe is around a quarter of total exports of the EEI.

Energy and Environment

The Austrian electrical engineering and electronics industry plays a key role in the current topic of guaranteeing uninterrupted supply. Industry firms have been investing in the development of new technologies to increase energy efficiency for many years.

This know how is invaluable for reducing dependancy on expensive energy imports and ensuring that, despite rises in the number of users, energy use does not increase still further. In this way the Austrian EEI also contributes to environmental protection.
