Austrian Business Climate Survey in Macedonia 2013

The Austrian Embassy – Commercial Section present the results of the first Austrian Business Climate Survey among Austrian companies in Macedonia. The three top priorities of Austrian companies regarding the Macedonian Government are reduction of bureaucracy, investor security and improvement of infrastructure.

In summer 2013 the Austrian Embassy – Commercial Section conducted the first business climate survey among Austrian companies established in Macedonia. The survey was conducted from June to mid of July 2013. The target group was managing directors of Austrian companies in Macedonia. The response rate was quite high (64%).

According to the latest official statistics of the Macedonian National Bank the total amount of Austrian direct investment in Macedonia amounts to 484,39 Mio. EUR (by 1 quarter 2013). Austria is thus one of the biggest investors in Macedonia. Austria is ranked No. 2 after Netherlands, followed by Greece, Slovenia and Hungary. More than 45 Austrian companies with Austrian capital are established in Macedonia.

Core Findings of the Survey

• Austrian companies in Macedonia are predominantly active in the services sector.
• Austrian companies are relatively pessimistic about the general economic situation in Macedonia, however with a more optimistic outlook for 2014.
• Regarding their own sector and economic situation, Austrian companies are more optimistic, many of them invested more and hired more employees than in 2012.
• Austrian companies assess the attractiveness of Macedonia as a destination of foreign direct investment predominantly as satisfactory or good.
• Regarding the framework conditions, the largest differences between expectations and reality are in fields like payment moral, infrastructure and fight against corruption.
• The three top priorities of Austrian companies regarding the Macedonian Government are reduction of bureaucracy, investor security and improvement of infrastructure.
