In the aftermath of the devastating Tsunami that struck Southeast Asia on 26th December 2004, Hilfswerk Austria and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber became active in a reconstruction project in Thailand. In cooperation with the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization, the Project ‘Austria – Phuket Community Center (APCC)’ was established in order to serve as a center and landmark in the community in terms of supporting work capabilities, developing working skills and increasing the standard of living by providing nursery, basic health care centers and public parks. The APCC is the first major foreign relief project after the Tsunami to be opened. The Inauguration ceremony of the project will be held on the 15th of December .
The main aim of the ‘Austria – Phuket Community Center’ is to support the local community by reconstructing and rehabilitating the livelihoods of the people affected by the Tsunami. The community center will be comprised of a kids’ care center (nursery), a basic health care center (linked to the nursery), a handy craft center, a public library and training center and a public park. Within its life span design, the envisaged project will include the implementation of actions that support sustainable health, social, human, environmental and economic development processes in Thailand.
