Overview

More than a thousand Austrian companies employ almost 25,000 people in the plastics processing industry. In addition to plastic raw materials and plastic products, a wide range of auxiliary materials for plastics manufacture and processing are produced in Austria. Austrian companies which produce machinery for plastics processing are at the forefront of the industry world-wide. Plastics - a material from Austria

Plastics processing has a long tradition: at the end of the 19th century companies in Austria were working with celluloid, artificial horn or galalith (erinoid) to make buttons, jewellery and other goods. Today Austrian plastics manufacturers and processors produce goods worth around 4.3 billion euros.

The small domestic market means that this branch is highly export-oriented, with some companies almost entirely focussed on export markets. Some companies manufacture plastics such as polyethylene or styrofoam. Plastics processing is of key importance.

The most important products

The most important products manufactured in Austria are :

  • Packaging (film/wrapping, tubs, canisters, bottles etc.)
  • Technical parts for the automotive, mechanical engineering and electronics industries
  • Pipes and building elements.
