Vienna , 14 th of February 2008 – Nigeria , the most populous state in Africa and an important mediator in regional conflicts, is an influential political partner to Austria and to the EU in Africa ” said the State Secretary Mr. Hans Winkler after a meeting with the Nigerian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe. Apart from bilateral issues, the conflict in Chad and the situation in Sudan were topics in the talks. The peace talks concerning Darfur took place in Nigeria in May 2006. The former president Olusegun Obasanjo campaigned for a solution of the conflict. “ Nigeria is also an important partner in searching a political solution for the conflict in Chad ”, emphasized State Secretary Hans Winkler in this context.

Economical issues were another complex of themes. Nigeria is the biggest producer on oil and gas in Africa and registers a high and stable economic growth, also Austria gets its crude oil to a large extend from Nigeria . “No doubt, there is a potential for bilateral economic projects and both sides a very interested in cooperation”, says State Secretary Winkler. That’s also why a delegation of Austrian companies will visit Nigeria in the beginning of March.
