19. May 2016

Austrian company Austria Card supplies the technology behind the new identity/credit card in Nigeria.

Nigeria's new national identity card is a project that's full of promise. Alongside a whole range of new functions, the first tranche of identity cards are to be equipped with a credit card function. This will be a "world first" according to Austria Card . The new identity documents are multifunctional chip cards, with space for 14 applications, such as an EMC-compatible payment function, biometric features with MOC (Match On Card) technology, a secure signature and an electronic ID application. The card can also be used as a travel document when entering certain countries.

In addition, the card body itself includes 18 security features, covering all categories (visible, hidden and forensic features) and which are intended to protect the card against manipulation and forgery. "These cards are probably the safest and most technologically advanced official documents in the world, since they combine the two worlds of identification and payment. It is an honour that Nigeria's National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is relying on Austrian technology, as well as our capabilities as one of the world's leading card manufacturers", states a spokesperson from Austria Card.

With a population of around 180 million, Nigeria is a significant market with a decisive influence on the continent as a whole and further afield.
