The "ecologisation" of tolls for motor vehicles exceeding a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 tonnes will come into effect on Austria's motorways and expressways on January 1st 2010. The implementation is based on the EU Eurovignette Directive, which requires a toll tariff system that distinguishes between EURO emission categories from 2010 onward.

The current toll system in Austria for motor vehicles with a permissible gross weight of over 3.5 tonnes will be largely maintained. It will, however, be extended to accommodate the additional differentiation in accordance with EU emissions categories. Motor vehicles will be divided into different categories (Euro I, II, III, IV...) based on their specified emission limits and summarised in three tariff groups (A, B and C). The new tariff system is thereby represented by a combination of a number and EURO emission category.

The EU Eurovignette Directive encompasses the following goals:

  • Encouraging the transport industry to convert to vehicles which are more environmentally friendly.
  • Increasing transport safety by modernising fleets is a positive side effect of changing to lower emission vehicles.
  • Reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions by up to 60% by 2015.

ASFINAG is dedicated to make the transition to the "ecologised" toll system as easy as possible: any existing contracts shall remain valid and the GO boxes do not need to be replaced. Starting August 1st 2009, it is possible to have the EURO emission category saved to the GO-Box at any GO sales point.
The tariffs which will apply from January 1st 2010 will be available at  www.go-maut.at and www.asfinag.at and can be accessed at any time.
