18. June 2009

Minister of the Environment Nikolaus Berlakovich and Minister for Economic Affairs Reinhold Mitterlehner reached an agreement on the Amendment to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Act. The "public interest" in the security of supply criticised by environmentalists will be eliminated, but reference will be made to "laws governing special subjects" (forestry law, water law).

In addition, the EIA procedure will be simplified as expert opinions dealing with specific matters may be re-used, e.g. no EIA procedures will be required for exchanging turbines. Chancellor Faymann high-lighted that a balance between ecology and economy was needed. Necessary reductions in the duration of the procedure should not be to the detriment of the environment.
