Norway is one of Austria's most important wine customers

20. March 2012

Austria's wine sector set a new export record at € 126 million (an increase of 2.6% over the previous year) in 2011. Norway ranked number 7 in the list of Austria’s most important export countries behind Germany, Switzerland, USA, Netherlands, Sweden and Great Britain. In 2011, Norway imported more than 400.000 liters of wine amounting to almost 2 Mio. EUR.

Austria has gained an excellent reputation for producing top-scoring wines. About 32,000 wineries produce approximately 2.5 million hectoliters of wine per year. Austrian white wines are produced mostly from Riesling and Gruner Veltliner grapes but Sauvignon Blanc grapes are also used. By far the most successful red wine varieties are Blauer Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, which continue to receive international acclaim.
