Gottfried Lindauer’s Exhibition in Auckland: Maori Portraits

2 February 2017

A highlight on both the artistic and the historical calendar of Auckland was the opening of the exhibition “The Māori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer’s New Zealand” at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki in October 2016. Unprecedented both in size and context, this exhibition (which runs until February 19th, 2017) displays more than 150 historic oil portraits of Māori and Pākehā, in the largest ever exhibition of work by artist Gottfried Lindauer.

In order to celebrate Gottfried Lindauer’s Bohemian / Austrian roots, Advantage Austria hosted an exclusive networking event combined with an intimate preview of the exhibition before the opening, enabling distinguished guests from the business, political, art as well as the Maori community to enjoy the artworks in a very personal setting. Highlights were a talk as well as a tour by Ngahiraka Mason, curator of the exhibition, as well as Rhana Devenport, director of the Auckland Art Gallery, followed by a fascinating Haka performance.
