Austria achieved fifth place in Visa Restrictions Index

29 March 2016

Austria has secured fifth place in the current “The Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index”, produced in cooperation with the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index is a global ranking of countries according to the travel freedom that their citizens enjoy. Since 2006, the Index has been produced in collaboration with IATA , which maintains the world’s largest database of travel information.

Today visa restrictions play an important role in controlling the movement of foreign nationals across borders. Another important aspect of visa requirements is that they are also an expression of the relationships between individual nations, and generally reflect the relations and status of a country within the international community of nations.

This year, Henley & Partners publishes the 11th Index in conjunction with the launch of the official Visa Restrictions Index website, offering viewers an interactive and comprehensive analysis of the countries’ progress and development over time.

Countries with a higher score than Austria included Germany which achieved first place, followed by Sweden at second place, Finland, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom at third place and Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands and the United States at fourth place. Austria successfully beat off many other countries such as Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, Hungary, Australia and Norway.

It comes as no surprise that Ireland and the United Kingdom which to date have not ratified the Schengen Agreement attained a lower score than most other EU-countries. They have chosen to maintain border controls with other EU countries and are therefore outside the Schengen area.
