Major international order for Austrian timber construction specialist

Rubner Holzbau from Ober-Grafendorf has received a major order in South-East Asia: the second-largest airport in the Philippines, Mactan Cebu International Airport, will be expanded and an additional new terminal will be added by 2018.

The project posed a unique challenge for the Austrian timber construction specialist: the wave-shaped, barrel-roofed structure of the new 65,000 m2 building will be created from arched beams made of glulam wood. A total of 4,500 m³ of glulam timber will be manufactured in Ober-Grafendorf before being shipped overseas. Under the supervision of Rubner Holzbau , it will be installed in Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island.

This project is a novelty in two respects: “In the entire company history of Rubner Holzbau in Ober-Grafendorf, this is the largest order that has ever been received for a structure made of glulam wood,” explains Project Manager Anton Wanas. There is also no other airport building anywhere in Asia that is constructed entirely from glulam. The challenge is enormous and is attracting attention around the world. For Rubner Holzbau, this large order is proof that the company – already a leader in engineered timber construction throughout Europe – is also playing in the top leagues on an international level when it comes to the planning and implementation of sophisticated wood-based architectural projects.

Rubner Holzbau employs some 500 people and has for more than 50 years been a reliable partner for installing glued laminated timber constructions, roof and wall elements, cross laminated timber, wood-glass façades, building envelopes and complete constructional solutions across Europe.
