Digitalization within construction industry in Finland and Sweden way ahead

4. May 2017

Austrian experts on study trip in the Nordics

While Central Europe´s construction industry still struggles with a change of paradigm, Building Information Modelling – BIM for short – no longer is a question in the North of Europe. Or, as Nina Borgström of Sweden's leading White Arkitekt put it, "BIM is already a routine, now we have to think ahead: Design for the unborn generation!"

Eight committed participants from innovative Austrian planning, construction and maintenance companies (Acht , Akkord , Asfinag , Delta , Porr , Side ) were deeply impressed by the progress in building information modelling in the North. Thus, Finland strives to build the right  awareness for the digitization in the construction industry through governmental initiatives like the KIRA-digi project. Another approach channels through  architecture, engineering and construction hackathons as well as the promotion of lead projects. How this works in practice the group was shown during  visits to Finish companies organized by our colleagues at the Helsinki office, Herwig Palfinger and Päivi Halme-Määttä.

In Stockholm, Commercial Counsellor Albrecht Zimburg and expert Michaela Herlemann rounded off  with topics like digital education, planning, construction and administration of buildings. The "Slussen " infrastructure project proved particularly impressive, where traditional drawings have been substituted by three-dimensional digital models only. The City of Stockholm provided yet another highlight showing off its innovative management system for kindergartens.

Unanimous tenor of all participants: Please, more of this.
