How Austrians spend “Advent”

12. November 2015

Learn how to enjoying pre-Christmas weeks the Austria way

Austrians and Swedes have something in common: they love to enjoy the four weeks before Christmas “advent” in a special manner like seasonal cookies, hot (alcoholic) beverages and preferably together with their families and friends. In Austria you often meet up at so called “advent”-markets that are to be found in every city and town during the weeks before Christmas. These markets comprise several small wooden cottages with shops or bars. They typically sell Austrian craft products or food and beverages, such as “Speck”, cheese, sweets or teas.  The most typical Austrian drinks during that season are “Glühwein” and “Punsch”. Glühwein is hot red wine, spiced up with cloves, oranges, cinnamon, sugar or honey, “Punsch” is based on a fruit – for example oranges or berries – and mixed with hard liquor, mainly rum or liqueur.

The most famous advent markets are the one in front of the Vienna City Hall called “Wiener Adventzauber”, the one in front of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna and the one in the heart of Salzburg’s old town called “Salzburger Christkindlmarkt”. If you get a chance to travel to Austria before Christmas check out your town for an advent market to experience the unique atmosphere during this period of the year!
