At the end of November the last section of the direct motorway link between Vienna and Bratislava was completed and opened. With a length of around 22 kilometres, the A6 Northeast motorway is a significant step in opening up the area of eastern Austria.

The opening of the direct motorway link has meant that both capital cities, Vienna and Bratislava, have been brought closer together, meeting the pressing needs of the economy. On the Slovakian side the motorway has been ready since 1990. It was 3 years ago when work began in Austria on the remaining 22 kilometres. Until now all of the car and HGV traffic between the two closest-situated capitals in the world went along one road through towns and built-up areas.
The opening of this route has meant the achievement of the following targets:

  • Reduced traffic levels on existing cross-border transport routes, built-up areas and border crossings.
  • Grouping of the international cross-border traffic.
  • Connecting new economic centres.
