The Ukrainian Milk Company, a producer of milk for baby food, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and produces electric and heat energy from livestock waste

The first in Ukraine biogas plant producing electric energy and heat has been working successfully for nine months. The cogerenation plant from the Austrian company Jenbacher (part of General Electrics) is installed at the agricultural firm The Ukrainian Milk Company, located near Kyiv.

The power plant converts livestock waste into biogas. Daily the farm of 4,000 cows produces 120 tons of biological waste. Biogas with the help of a cogeneration module is converted into 625 kW of electricity and 686 kW of thermal output. The company sells the excess power for the grid. The company’s livestock waste processing and production of energy from biogas allow to prevent the emission of 18,000 tons of greenhouse gases per year.

In Ukraine, for four years already heat and electric power has been produced with the equipment from GE Jenbacher. In 2006, the A. F. Zasiadko mine was equipped with the 12 cogeneration modules of Jenbacher.

The equipment from the company GE Jenbacher is used in biogas projects all over the world, including the world’s largest biogas plant with the capacity of 5.6 MW, which is to be launched in September 2010 in China.
