 Austrian economy becoming more international

2007 could be a record year for Austrian foreign direct investments (FDI) abroad as well as for international investments in Austria. Already in the first half of 2007 Austrian companies invested with EUR 14 billion twice as much abroad as in the whole of 2006. But also internationall FDI in Austria more then doubled to EUR 12 billion. “The Austrian economy is becoming more international”, is the summary of a presentation given by the Austrian Central Bank (Oesterreichische Nationalbank, OeNB) in Oct. 2007 on the release of the ‘World Investment Report 2007’.

The increased competence of Bank-Austria Creditanstalt, a daughter of Italian UniCredit group, in the Eastern European region also showed in the balance figures of BA-CA which nearly doubled. Other Austrian banks like Erste Bank, Raiffeisen and Volksbanken made further investments abroad.

As per the end of 2005 Austria was the biggest foreign investor in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Croatia. Austrian companies were also among the top investors in other Eastern and Central European countries. At the end of 2005 1,048 Austrian companies had a total of 3,013 daughter companies abroad (a plus of over 10% compared to a year before). Altogether Austrians held EUR 55.5 billion in companies abroad. International investors had some EUR 59 billion invested in Austrian companies.
