Competition for Austria´s Top Producers in the Industry

28 Austrian businesses participated at the first “Fabrik2010” Competition for Austria´s Best Production Site, organized by “Fraunhofer Austria”, a nonprofit research organization, and the Austrian “Industrie Magazin”.

Participating businesses had to go through a threefold evaluation process. After a general evaluation of questionnaires, 12 businesses were selected to be a contestant. These companies had to undergo another evaluation, where the three finalists were chosen, who then each gave a 30 minute presentation of their business in the third round before being questioned by the Jury.

The main criterion was efficiency. The Jury applied an evaluation method developed by “Fraunhofer Austria”, which focuses on evaluating how well the business is integrated into the supply chain, how they realize Lean Management concepts and, above all, the efficiency of the location. This allowed for an integral impression of the participants´ efficiency.

Another crucial goal of the competition next to ranking locations and businesses was to determine the criteria of successful businesses. Here it showed that most of the Top 12 businesses had quality management systems and applied the “Lean Management” concept throughout all their production and administration. Furthermore, employees play a key role in successful businesses, either by actively involving them in the problem solving processes or by offering flexible work schedules.

The Top 12 Businesses were:
BMW Motoren GmbH, Steyr
GM Powertrain Austria GmbH, Wien
Hella Fahrzeugteile Austria GmbH, Großpetersdorf
Henkel Central Eastern Europe GmbH, Wien
Infineon Technologies Austria AG, Villach
Mahle Filtersysteme Austria GmbH, St. Michael
Mondi Neusiedler GmbH, Ulmerfeld-Hausmening
Palfinger AG, Lengau
Robert Bosch AG, Hallein
Senoplast Klepsch & Co GmbH, Piesendorf
Treibacher Industrie AG, Althofen
Zumtobel Lighting GmbH, Dornbirn

After almost 180 days of competing, BMW Motoren GmbH in Steyr won the competition “Fabrik 2010”, because they managed to achieve a productivity growth of more than 40% over the last five years by identifying and realizing possible savings. Robert Bosch AG ranked second, and Infineon Technologies Austria third.

A special price for energy efficiency in the production was granted to Senoplast Klepsch & Co GmbH at the “Fabrik 2010 Award”.
