Export of Austrian environmental technologies and investments in the USA discussed in Vienna

Franz Roessler, Austrian Trade Commissioner in Chicago, spoke at a press briefing this week in Vienna together with Jennivine Kwan of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and Dwight Yochim of WoodWorks, an initiative of the Wood Products Council. In Austria, improvements in energy efficiency in buildings stand in the forefront, while the LEED system (“Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”) for green buildings is prominent in the US. LEED was developed by the USGBC and measures energy efficiency and use of water and other resources, utilization of environmentally friendly materials and air quality in a building, according to Kwan. The system is currently in use in 100 countries.

90% of single family homes in the USA are made of wood, but only 10% of multiple-family dwellings and commercial buildings use the material. WoodWork’s initiative seeks to double this amount in the next 5 years. Austria’s wood prefabrication technologies can be a great example for the USA, says Yochim.

Kwan and Yochim are part of a 10-member delegation of US energy efficiency experts on a weeklong visit to Austria to learn about new technologies and developments. The trip is part of the George C. Marshall initiative of the Austrian Foreign Ministry and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.
