Austria appears at its best: A Food Trip as a compass for gourmets

November 14, 2014

On the occasion of Marketplace Austria setting stage for Austria’s finest boutique specialty food and beverage makers that took place in Vienna on October 15 the Austrian Trade Commission in New York in cooperation with go international and AMA organized an extraordinary food trip for 10 US buyers, importers and decision makers through Austria.

After driving over 620 miles, crossing 6 different provinces, and visiting 7 Austrian companies it became clear: Austria is grand, overall and down to the last epicurean detail.

Wholesalers, retailers, buyers, importers, and specialty food experts from all over the world flew in to take part at Marketplace Vienna, and met with more than 100 Austrian companies from the food & beverage industry. Spoilt for choice: cheese and dairy, chocolate, vinegar, wine, pumpkinseed oil, candy, granola, juices, coffee, delicacies, jam, etc… specialty food as far as the eye can reach. A big success for all attendees whether one wanted to source and buy, or to present and sell.

After a stunning evening with hearty dinner at one of the oldest typical Viennese taverns (Heuriger), a gourmet food trip through Austria began Thursday early morning: Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Carinthia, and their cheese and dairy manufacturers presented themselves in the best light. Driving through a beautiful landscape, tasting some of the best cheeses and dairy products Austria has to offer, being given a guided tour of the baroque Monastery of Schlierbach , and visiting an authentic organic farm from where you had a breathtaking view over Carinthia’s Millstaetter See surrounded by foliage colored mountains made the attendees going into rhapsodies about Austria’s hidden gems. The cheese tastings were completed by a flavorful vinegar tasting at Goelles and a dulcet visit at Zotter’s Chocolate Museum in Styria.

We will keep you posted for what we have in mind for next year …
