Austrian steelmaker voestalpine opens new plant in South Texas

October 31, 2016

Largest investment ever made by an Austrian company in the US

At USD 740 million, the newly opened HBI plant in Corpus Christi is the largest investment ever made in the US by an Austrian company. Located two hours south of San Antonio, the plant's 190 employees are expected to produce 2 million tons of high-quality HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron, or sponge iron), a sophisticated pre-material used in steel production. The plant's high-temperature furnaces run on natural gas pipelined from the oil fields of the Eagle Ford Shale.
