PASSION FOR PEZ: WORLD’S LARGEST MEMORABILIA EXHIBIT
PEZ is known for its tasty candy and ever changing dispensers, but what people do not expect is that PEZ started as a public health campaign in Austria.
In 1927 Eduard Haas III invented PEZ, which is short for the German word for peppermint, as an alternative to smoking. The now popular dispenser was later created by Oscar Uxa in order to provide a hygienic way to eat candy without using your fingers. The design was intended to look like a cigarette lighter to again resemble an alternative to smoking.
Nevertheless, a couple of years after shifting the PEZ production to the US someone thought of putting a head on top of the dispensers to celebrate Halloween and a phenomenon was born! Throughout the years over 1,500 different PEZ dispensers were designed, ranging from licensed characters, such as Popeye and Winnie the Pooh, to presidents of the United States.
Each day 12 million PEZ tabs are produced and packaged into 1 million rolls using 100,000 pounds of sugar every week. You can visit the PEZ factory in Orange, Connecticut, exhibiting the most comprehensive collection of PEZ memorabilia in the world.
