Vienna
August 7, 2014

Austria's capital an ideal setting for the competition

The 60th Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Vienna from May 19 to 23, 2015. As an international center of culture, music and the arts, this lifestyle hub provides the ideal setting for an event of this caliber.

The decision as to which city will host the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest has been made. Vienna is delighted to confirm that both the semi-finals (May 19 and 21, 2015) and the grand finale (May 23, 2015) will take place at the Wiener Stadthalle. Austria’s Conchita Wurst, who won the international music competition in Copenhagen in 2014 with her song, Rise Like A Phoenix, will definitely be among the live acts.

Vienna fulfills all the requirements for hosting a major event such as the European Song Contest. Vienna International Airport operates directs flights to 177 destinations in 69 countries. And air travellers can reach the city center in just 16 minutes aboard the City Airport Train (CAT). Autumn 2014 will bring the official opening of the new Hauptbahnhof, the capital’s new, state-of-the international rail hub. Vienna has an excellent – and highly reliable – public transportation network. The underground S-Bahn commuter railway, bus, and tram links cover a total distance of some 1,044 km.

Visitors to the capital have their pick of 60,459 hotel beds spread across 428 different properties, 187 of which fall into the four and five-star category. There are 48,500 hotel beds within a five kilometer radius of the Stadthalle, all of which can be reached easily by public transportation. Vienna has around 7,400 bars and restaurants, 800 of which can be found in the historic city center. The city has a proven track record of hosting large-scale events such as the Life Ball, World AIDS Congress, the European Congress of Radiology and the Euro 2008 football championships. Vienna placed third in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings.

The Austrian capital is also a world class destination for culture, music and the arts. Every night in Vienna around 10,000 music fans are treated to live classical music, and each year the Vienna concert schedule includes more than 15,000 events of various sizes and genres. In the latest accolade endorsing Vienna’s strong international reputation as a culture capital, the readers of online city guide GayCities.com ranked Vienna top among 223 cities worldwide in the “Culture Hub” category.
