Ten European countries reach plastics packaging recycling goal despite economic challenges

A recent report compiled by four European trade organizations praises the recycling efforts of Europeans: In 2008, 29% of all plastic packaging was recycled, easily exceeding the target recycling rate of 22.5%. The trade organizations involved in the report are PlasticsEurope, European Plastics Converters, European Plastics Recyclers, and the European Association of Plastics Recycling and Recovery Organizations (EPRO). “We distinguish between recycling and energy recovery,” said EPRO general secretary Peter Sundt. “But it all counts as recovery of plastics as long as it is not incineration without energy recovery.”

Austria is among the ten European Union member states which recovered more than 30% of their plastic packaging. The major producers of plastics in Europe are Germany with 7.5% of the global production, followed by the Benelux countries, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain. Although Austria is not among the largest plastic producers within Europe, it is regarded as one of the top 10 plastic packaging recyclers.

Packaging remains the biggest end-use market for plastics in Europe (38%), followed by construction (28%), automotive (7%) and electrical and electronics (6%). Other applications, including medical and leisure, account for 28%.
